Pontresina becomes new main sponsor

The Engadin resort of Pontresina, renowned for its superb cross-country skiing, is boosting its strategic partnership and will now support the race as main sponsor.

The Marathon Village, with the distribution of bib numbers, is also moving to the attractive main street in the heart of the village. Pontresina has energetically supported Switzerland’s cross-country ski scene for years, and regularly hosts regional and national competitions for up-and-coming talent.

Cross-country skiers feel a special affection for the Engadin and Pontresina. No wonder: up to 220 km of prepared trails lead through the side valleys, across the Upper Engadin plateau with its frozen lakes, and into the picturesque region of La Plaiv. Located in the heart of the Upper Engadin, Pontresina is the perfect base for training along the course of the Engadin Ski Marathon. Enthusiasts can test their limits on racing trails here or do additional training sessions on the floodlit night trail at the cross-country ski centre. This is illuminated every evening in winter from 5 to 9 pm.

Cross-country ski season opening in Pontresina

Enthusiasts can already start their cross-country ski season at the end of November, under expert guidance. The official Cross-Country Opening in Pontresina is all about individual performance, tuition in small groups and personal attention: in other words, the perfect preparation for a promising cross-country ski season!

Course 1: Thursday 28 November to Sunday 1 December 2019
Course 2: Sunday 1 December to Wednesday 4 December 2019

Snow-sure thanks to high altitude

The cross-country ski paradise of Pontresina lies at an altitude of 1,800 metres (valley floor), and boasts modern snow-making facilities for its cross-country ski trails. Depending on snow conditions down in the valley, enthusiasts can extend their season in autumn and spring by skiing higher up in a dramatic alpine setting. At Alp Bondo, by the Bernina Pass, our technical teams create a trail up to 10 km long, as required. This leads along the Rhaetian Railway’s Bernina line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the famous Bernina Express.
