Lea Fischer wins the Engadine Women's Race.
Giuliana Werro had been the 24th Women's Race's top favourite in the run-up. The athlete from Zernez, who had won the Engadin Skimarathon in 2023, and Lea Fisher from Davos, had led a small group at the front for most of the race. After the rough climb just past Zuoz, the two managed to shake off Carla and Gianna Wohler. Werro then did her best to leave behind Lea Fischer, too. Fischer, however, succeeded in staying hard on the heels of Giuliana Werro and decided the sprint finish in S-chanf in her favour by eight-tenths of a second. Carla Wohler from Scuol came in third, some 15 seconds behind; she had won the race in record time two years ago. She won the day's second sprint finish against her twin sister Gianna. Fifth place went to Seraina Boner from Davos.
For winner Lea Fischer, it was a first at the Engadine Women's Race. The duel against Giuliana Werro had been taxing, she said at the finish. «Giuliana almost succeeded in shaking me off after Zuoz.» Giuliana Werro was very satisfied with her performance despite her defeat in the sprint finish. «I felt weak all week and was happy to be able to start at all. After today's race, I am looking forward to the Engadin Skimarathon next Sunday!»
Perfect snow conditions and a steel-blue sky marked the 24th Engadine Women's Race. 1,198 women had entered the race – the highest number since the pandemic.
The Engadine Marathon Week is the biggest cross-country skiing festival in the Alps. The next fixture is the Engadine Night Race on Thursday evening (17 km from Sils to Pontresina). Sunday, 9 March will see the Engadin Ski Marathon and Half-marathon.
